In this weeks BMJ Ingrid Torgesen reports “Hunt aims for fully home grown doctor workforce” (BMJ 2016;355:i5399) without seeming to laugh in her text.

Mr Hunt needs 40,000 GPs in the next 10 years. 1,500 extra per annum with a 10 year lead in will make no difference. The irony of the completely inadequate manpower planning over numerous administrations seems to have been lost on the media….. Readers should blame the first past the post 5 year electoral cycle. Vote Liberal and we may get sensible longer term planning.

Expanding the number of medical student places by 25%, announced by England’s health secretary at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham on Tuesday 4 October, will take at least a decade to have an effect in the NHS, doctors’ leaders have warned.

In his speech Jeremy Hunt announced that “from September 2018 we will train up to 1500 more doctors every year” in England in a bid to expand the number of home grown doctors and to replace doctors recruited from overseas, who currently make up 25% of the medical workforce. “Of course, it will take a number of years before those doctors qualify, but by the end of the next parliament we will make the NHS self sufficient in doctors,” he said.

I support the idea of Community Health Councils, although I feel they should be funded at arms length from government. I have taught GP trainees for 30 years, and been a Programme Director for GP training in Pembrokeshire 20 years. I served on the Pembrokeshire LHG and LHB for a total of 10 years. I completed an MBA in 1996, and I along with most others, never had an exit interview from any job in the NHS! I completed an MBA in 1996, and was a runner up for the Adam Smith prize for economy and efficiency in government in that year. This was owing to a suggestion (St Thomas' Mutual) that practices had incentives for saving by being allowed to buy rationed out services in the following year.
