Does the Medical Profession need to commission Charlie Ebdo to change the health services?

The lack of forthright speaking out from the profession on the different Regional Health Services leads NHSreality to ask “Does the Medical Profession need to commission Charlie Ebdo to change the health services?”

Just as the Danes ( Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy ) have withdrawn from critical cartoons of religious figures, the medical profession have withdrawn from speaking out about the Health Services. When a local debate wins the motion on “overt rationing” the BMA will not take it further…. Our Health Service is under attack by covert rationing, hypocrisy and political denial.

Free speech needs to be constrained if violence results. Both the Pope (Pope says those who insult religion should expect a punch ) and the American Government (BBC News – Radical cleric Abu Hamza jailed for life by US …) seem to agree on this. But free speech without incitement, and simply arguing on a philosophical basis for changes is in retreat. In 2012 the Guardian reported Pussy Riot sentenced to two years in prison , and in The Independent Raif Badawi: Sentenced to 1000 lashes, and in the Guardian A look at the writings of Saudi blogger Raif Badawi Ian Black analyses extracts from his key published Arabic writings that show a man who risked his freedom to question some of the basic tenets of life in Saudi Arabia – especially the central role of religion. WikiLeaks Julian Assangewill not leave Ecuador’s embassy even if Sweden drops its extradition bid over accusations of sexual assault, because he fears moves are already underway by the US to prosecute him on espionage charges“,

Iranian dissidents and activists have been shot and/or captivated throughout the world. There are too many to link to …

Other outspoken dissidents include the Dalai Lama, and Liu Xiabo amongst many…

Freedom of speech in medics has been driven out …. despite instructions to the contrary..

About Roger Burns - retired GP

I am a retired GP and medical educator. I have supported patient participation throughout my career, and my practice, St Thomas; Surgery, has had a longstanding and active Patient Participation Group (PPG). I support the idea of Community Health Councils, although I feel they should be funded at arms length from government. I have taught GP trainees for 30 years, and been a Programme Director for GP training in Pembrokeshire 20 years. I served on the Pembrokeshire LHG and LHB for a total of 10 years. I completed an MBA in 1996, and I along with most others, never had an exit interview from any job in the NHS! I completed an MBA in 1996, and was a runner up for the Adam Smith prize for economy and efficiency in government in that year. This was owing to a suggestion (St Thomas' Mutual) that practices had incentives for saving by being allowed to buy rationed out services in the following year.
