Education Education Education!!! Our politicians have failed us all.

Update 10th December 2013:

Does Medical Education reflect general educational standards? What has been happening in Medical Education? Often relatively inexperience doctors are put in charge of the basic (Foundation years 1 & 2) training. Often GPs, those with most experience and training qualifications are excluded from roles in Hospitals when they are the ones with a holistic overview. It is a great pity that there is a difference between hospital doctors, who are not paid to teach, and GPs who have been paid to teach for 40 years.

Update 3rd December 2013:

BBC Sean Coughlan reports: Pisa tests: UK stagnates as Shanghai tops league table

Pisa ranks Wales’ education the worst in the UK

Listen to Huw Lewis and particularly his comments on Maths, which means all sciences as these are maths based. It is going to be a difficult and slow job to turn education around.

Our politicians have failed us.

So not much chance in the competing world for Welsh students outside Wales.. This is the sort of report that influences the recruitment of professionals to Wales, and contributes to the net 20% annual loss of graduates. Its time those living in Wales had a vote on whether to return to the Welsh Office days, close the Welsh Assembly and have £600 more per student for education and £ ? for health per patient.

? I am trying to find this figure out.. but like the “overhead” for non clinical staff, something that was known by Aneurin Bevan in 1952 is not known now! We had a 20% turnout to change the rules in Wales. What other organisation would allow a change of this magnitude on such a turnout where 11% voted for and 9% voted against. The 80% who did not turn out have little to complain about and should be ashamed now…. but lets give them another chance. What’s wrong with aspiring to excellence. What’s wrong with putting this ahead of reducing inequalities – and joining the real world?  It will certainly help recruitment and retention of professionals..

About Roger Burns - retired GP

I am a retired GP and medical educator. I have supported patient participation throughout my career, and my practice, St Thomas; Surgery, has had a longstanding and active Patient Participation Group (PPG). I support the idea of Community Health Councils, although I feel they should be funded at arms length from government. I have taught GP trainees for 30 years, and been a Programme Director for GP training in Pembrokeshire 20 years. I served on the Pembrokeshire LHG and LHB for a total of 10 years. I completed an MBA in 1996, and I along with most others, never had an exit interview from any job in the NHS! I completed an MBA in 1996, and was a runner up for the Adam Smith prize for economy and efficiency in government in that year. This was owing to a suggestion (St Thomas' Mutual) that practices had incentives for saving by being allowed to buy rationed out services in the following year.
